Lesson 3

Overview

In this lesson, students will explore how biased data influences AI systems through two engaging simulations: a music recommendation activity and a predictive language task. Students will see how incomplete or biased training data can lead to skewed AI decisions, then connect this idea to how human language and assumptions reveal unconscious bias. These activities help students reflect on fairness, representation, and how both human and AI “inputs” shape outcomes.

After this lesson, students will be able to...

  • Simulate how AI systems learn from training data to make decisions.
  • Identify how biased or incomplete data can lead to unfair outcomes.
  • Analyze how predictive text systems mirror bias in language.
  • Reflect on how their own assumptions influence interpretation and decision-making.
  • Propose ways to reduce bias in AI systems and data collection.
