Voices of Home: A Creative Call to Action for International Mother Language Day
Overview
February 21st is International Mother Language Day, a day created to promote, preserve, and protect all mother tongues, especially those at risk of extinction.
To join the spirit of the day, Creative Changemakers asks you to create a piece of art, writing, music, or performance that celebrates your mother language or a language that connects you to your heritage or even your inner being.
This could be, but is not limited to, a poem that weaves together multiple languages you speak, a visual artwork incorporating the script or symbols of your mother tongue, a short story about what language means to your family, or a recording of a song, proverb, or story in your mother language with a reflection on why it matters to you.
Step 1: Reflect on Your Language StoryÂ
Think about your mother language or a language that connects you to your heritage. What does this language mean to you and your family? What memories, stories, or feelings does it hold?
Step 2: Choose Your Creative MediumÂ
Decide how you want to tell your language story. You could write, draw, paint, film, photograph, compose music, record audio, perform, or use any other creative form that speaks to you. Pick whatever medium feels right for your story.
Step 3: Create Your PieceÂ
Bring your idea to life! Remember, there’s no right or wrong way to celebrate your mother language. Your piece can be personal, experimental, traditional, or anything in between.
Step 4: Reflect on the ConnectionÂ
Write a brief reflection explaining why this language matters to you and how your piece connects to reducing inequalities and celebrating cultural diversity.
