Mental Health Poetry Project

Overview
Participants will use spoken or written word poetry to explore and express their experiences with mental health and well-being. Through reflection, creative writing, and performance or presentation, they will craft meaningful narratives that highlight emotions, coping strategies, sources of strength, and aspirations.
This activity encourages self-expression and connection through the power of words.
Set the Intention
Reflect on what mental health and well-being mean to you. Define your goals for this piece and what emotions or experiences you want to express through spoken or written word poetry.
Explore Themes
Your poem may explore any of the following themes:
- Emotions (joy, sadness, calm)
- Coping Strategies (activities, practices, or mindsets that help you)
- Sources of Strength (people, places, or experiences that support you)
- Hopes and Aspirations (your vision for well-being and growth)
Write and Refine
Craft a poem that reflects your chosen themes. Experiment with rhythm, structure, and word choice to bring your story to life.
Rehearse and Record
(for spoken word poetry)
Practice delivering your poem with intention and emotion. Consider tone, pacing, and emphasis. If recording, find a space with good sound quality and clarity.
Reflect
Write a short statement about your poem, explaining its meaning or the emotions and ideas it conveys.
Submit
Upload your completed piece to InnerView AND submit it to our youth mental health campaign #CreateConnectCare.
