Module 5

Humans First: AI through Design Thinking

Overview

Students discover that technology and AI reflect human choices and values. Through the design thinking process, they learn to identify bias, center empathy, and design inclusive, ethical technologies. Students analyze real-world examples, prototype human-centered solutions, and create stories or artworks that illustrate AI’s social impact and potential for good.

Lessons

  • Lesson 1: Is Technology (and AI) Ever Neutral?

AI systems increasingly shape how we learn, work, and interact. Understanding that AI reflects human choices, values, and biases helps students become thoughtful users and ethical designers. This lesson invites students to question whether technology can ever be neutral and explore how human decisions shape AI outcomes.

  • Lesson 2: Design Thinking Meets Responsible AI

AI influences decisions in hiring, healthcare, education, and policing. Understanding how inclusive design can reduce bias helps students learn to center human needs and create fairer, more equitable technologies. Through design thinking, students explore how empathy, creativity, and ethics shape responsible AI.

  • Lesson 3: Measuring the Social Impact of AI

AI systems can drive innovation, but they can also create unintended harm, especially for marginalized groups. By learning to evaluate AI’s real-world effects, students develop the skills to recognize both benefits and risks, and to advocate for technologies that promote fairness, accountability, and well-being.

  • Lesson 4: Storytelling the Impact of AI

Storytelling transforms data into empathy. In this lesson, students will create original works of art, narrative, or media to explore how AI affects people. Through creative expression, students will show how design choices ripple through communities and they will imagine a more just and human-centered future for themselves and others.
